    Arizona State University’s ISTB 4 Building Receives LEED Gold Certification

    Aircuity Helps ASU’s Largest Research Facility Save Energy


    NEWTON, Mass., USA – January 22, 2013 – Aircuity, the smart airside efficiency company, announced today that its customer, Arizona State University (ASU) has received the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold Certification for its new Interdisciplinary Science and Technology IV (ISTB 4) building. The seven story, 293,000 square foot building was designed to be 40% more energy efficient compared to a traditional laboratory design.

    Formally opened in September, ISTB 4 is the largest research facility in the history of Arizona State University. HDR and Ehrlich Architects collaborated to design flexible laboratory space for the university’s School of Earth and Space Exploration, ASU’s Security and Defense System Initiative and the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering. The building is home to an abundance of laboratory space with 166 lab modules with both wet and dry labs, in addition to a rooftop laboratory. A large amount of public space was also included in the design along with offices, collaboration space and meeting rooms for faculty and university staff.

    ISTB 4 earned 46 total LEED points, and based on its efficient design, uses nearly one-half of the energy of a typical lab building. Aircuity helps drive these savings through centralized demand control ventilation solutions. A multiplexed centralized sensing system continually monitors critical indoor parameters, lowering the ventilation when the air is clean and increasing fresh air when an issue has been detected.

    Arizona State University first installed Aircuity in the Biodesign Institute in 2006. The initial phase of the installation paid for itself in less than a year and after implementing Aircuity throughout the rest of the Biodesign Institute, ASU went on to install Aircuity in an additional 23 buildings across campus.
